Handwriting is a skill that we take time to teach so that children are able to write with fluency and focus on content of their writing rather than how their letters are formed.
In the EYFS, the children are initially taught to write in a printed style so that they can confidently use their sounds to support their independent writing skill. By the beginning of Year One, children are taught how to form their letters using a pre-cursive style. Once they have established this skill, they begin to join their letters. The aim is that children should be able to write in a neat, joined hand by the time they leave Year Two.
